Burn injuries are physically and emotionally traumatic for the victim.  The complications associated with burn injuries are severe and often times fatal.  In the U.S., burn injuries are among the top three most common causes of unpredicted death.

Most burn injury sufferers will have to live with permanent disfigurement, scarring, and complex emotional damage.  During a burn injury, the largest organ on the human body is damaged, the skin.  When the skin is damaged, it takes years for it to fully heal.  This recovery period can be extremely painful for the burn injury victim, who will find that they are physically limited.

Types of Burn Injuries
Burn injuries are categorized as first, second, and third degree burns.

  • First Degree Burns affect the epidermis (outer layer of skin).  These types of burns irritate the skin and cause redness.  An example of a first degree burn would be mild sunburn.

  • Second Degree Burns affect the dermis (layer below the epidermis).  These types of burns cause the skin to turn pink and blister.  The burned area may also be moist.  While these burns are painful, they usually heal within two weeks time.  An example of a second degree burn would be touching a frying pan.

  • Third Degree Burns affect all the layers of skin and the tissue beneath.  These burns are usually white or black in color and cause permanent scarring.  Third degree burns are the most harmful and require the longest period of recovery.  Sometimes, a severe third degree burn can be fatal.  An example of a third degree burn would be direct bodily exposure to fire or immersion in hot water.

Due to the seriousness of their injuries, burn injury victims have to rely upon the ongoing aid of physicians, surgeons, physical therapists, and caregivers.  Continual medical attention is necessary, but it can be financially demanding.  Without economic security, burn injury victims will find it difficult to get the treatment they need.

Fortunately, personal injury law allows burn injury victims and their families to seek monetary damages if their injuries were caused by another person’s negligence or recklessness.
